What employers look for in your Resume?

What employers look for in your Resume?

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) conducted a survey on Cover Letters (CV ) and Resumes. The survey was based on the responses of randomly selected members of the Employment ManagementAssociation (EMA); 582 human resource professionals responded.

Here's what can help you make a mark with your resume:

Two-third of the employers prefer chorological resumes where the applicant has arranged his work history and educational qualification in reverse order. Four in 10 like them to be mentioned in bullets.

Thirty-eight per cent employers look for the candidates' most relevant work history, another 38 per cent like going through eight to ten years back. Only nine per cent ask for an elaborate work history of 11 to 15 years.

Almost every employer wants a custom made resume and a cover later that fits the job or the industry. Nearly seven out of ten take personalised cover letters positively.

A well-written cover letter will detail on how the candidate is acceptable at the position and can suffice the job requirements as well as will tell why he has chosen to be a part of the organisation. When asked to rate in general terms, the overall quality of the cover letters they receive today, nearly half of the survey respondents rate the quality as good, while the same percentage of respondents rate the quality as fair.

Seventy-six per cent say that typos or grammatical errors found in cover letters would cause them to remove the applicant from the pool of possible candidates. Sixty-one per cent say the same thing about cover letters addressed to the wrong company.

While attending an interview, almost every employer wants the candidate to explain the reason for being laid off or fired from the previous organization.

Sixty-eight per cent of the hirers prefer to get resumes through websites over email, postal mail, notice board or applicant tracking system

Eighty-three per cent of HR professionals report that the average length of time they or a member of their staff spend reading a cover letter sent by a job applicant is one minute or less and much of them spent less than five minutes per resume to decide whether an applicant can proceed further.

In the world of cut-throat competition, a resume certainly is the top impression maker. The best resumes create lasting impression and coupled with the correct attitude at the interview, crack your dream job!

Mail sent by Narayan Murthy to all Infosys staff:

Mail sent by Narayan Murthy to all Infosys staff:

It’s half past 8 in the office but the lights are still on… PCs still running, coffee machines still buzzing… And who’s at work? Most of them ??? Take a closer look…
All or most specimens are ?? Something male species of the human race…
Look closer… again all or most of them are bachelors…
And why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!! Any guesses??? Let’s ask one of them… Here’s what he says… ‘What’s there 2 do after going home…Here we get to surf, AC, phone, food, coffee that is why I am working late…Importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!!’
This is the scene in most research centers and software companies and other off-shore offices.
Bachelors ‘Passing-Time’ during late hours in the office just bcoz they say they’ve nothing else to do… Now what r the consequences…
‘Working’ (for the record only) late hours soon becomes part of the institute or company culture.
With bosses more than eager to provide support to those ‘working’ late in the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and of course good feedback, (oh, he’s a hard worker….. goes home only to change..!!). They aren’t helping things too…
To hell with bosses who don’t understand the difference between ‘sitting’ late and ‘working’ late!!!
Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra working hours.
So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married and start having a family… office is no longer a priority, family is… and That’s when the problem starts… b’coz u start having commitments at home too.
For your boss, the earlier ‘hardworking’ guy suddenly seems to become a ‘early leaver’ even if u leave an hour after regular time… after doing the same amount of work.
People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labelled as work-shirkers…
Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays… though) leave on time are labelled as ‘not up to it’. All the while, the bachelors pat their own backs and carry on ‘working’ not realizing that they r spoiling the work culture at their own place and never realize that they would have to regret at one point of time.
So what’s the moral of the story??
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!!
* Never put in extra time ‘ unless really needed ‘
* Don’t stay back unnecessarily and spoil your company work culture which will in turn cause inconvenience to you and your colleagues.
There are hundred other things to do in the evening..
Learn music…..
Learn a foreign language…
Try a sport… TT, cricket………..
Importantly,get a girl friend or boy friend, take him/her around town…
* And for heaven’s sake, net cafe rates have dropped to an all-time low (plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change.
Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: *’Life’s calling, where are you??’*
Please pass on this message to all those colleagues and please do it before leaving time, don’t stay back till midnight to forward this!!!
IT’S A TYPICAL INDIAN MENTALITY THAT WORKING FOR LONG HOURS MEANS VERY HARD WORKING & 100% COMMITMENT ETC.
PEOPLE WHO REGULARLY SIT LATE IN THE OFFICE DON’T KNOW TO MANAGE THEIR TIME. SIMPLE !
Regards, NARAYAN MURTHY.

Seven ways to get effective body language for job interviews:-

Seven ways to get effective body language for job interviews:-

Job interviews are not just about good resumes, knowledge and the words you speak. Your body language is equally important that not only tells a lot about you, but may also stand as an important factor between getting hired or not.

Here are seven ways on how you can improve upon the physical aspects that govern your non verbal communication:

* Make a pleasing entrance:
An interview starts even before you get into the interview room. You never know who could be in the parking lot with you, looking at you from a window or standing next to you in the elevator. The key is to keep calm and you will appear calm. From entering the office building to waiting in the common hall to entering the interviewer's cabin, your body should tell anyone who might be watching that you're confident and prepared.

* The handshake:
Job interviews mean handshakes. So not only maintain a formal distance with the interviewer while doing this, but also offer your hand with the palm slightly up so that your interviewer's hand covers yours. Since you are going to shake with your right hand, be prepared for it by arranging your belongings on your left side.
Remember, never cover the other person's hand with the hand you are not shaking with.

* Sit properly:
Sit upright but in a relaxed fashion leaning slightly forward at about a 10 to 15 degree angle towards the interviewer. This sends the message that you are interested and involved.

* Maintain eye contact:
Always maintain eye contact and be an active listener. Keep nodding lightly while the other person is speaking so as to give an impression that you are interested in what the other person is saying. Also, keeping eye contact forms a positive connection and tends to reduce the tension. This also expresses your self-confidence.

* Be aware of your hands:
The best thing to do with your hands is to rest them loosely clasped in your lap or on the table, if there is one. Fiddling with hair, face or neck sends the message of anxiety and uncertainty. Body language experts say that touching the nose, lips or ears gives a negative impression and can signal that the candidate is lying. Avoid keeping your hands folded or crossed. This signals that you are defensive and even portrays a threatening and negative attitude.

* Show synchronisation:
Synchronise yourself with the other person. Read his/her habits and follow his/her facial cues and impressions. This would enable you to know if the other person is or isn't agreeing to your comment. Then make impromptu modifications in your speech as the occasion demands.

* Avoid drooping and looking downcast:
Finally, avoid drooping and looking downcast, no matter how the interview session is going. Be forward, confident and direct when you speak or act.

Getting a hold on your non-verbal commutation methods certainly makes the difference between getting the right job or not. Becoming perfect in all aspects might take time, but practicing the aspects over and over again will surely take you a long way!
